Google Maps is the #1 source for targeted local web traffic for your business. Google Maps shows local search results when someone searches for keywords related to your city such as "Asheville, NC Spa." Ever wonder how your domain, address, and phone number are added to google maps? What I'm about to share with you is one of the most important to-do tasks to start as soon as you finish reading my informative tutorial. For any business owner you absolutely must play an active roll in your local google listing. You must "claim your business" on google maps! In this first screen shot notice the listings when I search for "Asheville Spa."
How Google Obtains Your Contact Information
Google crawls your website and looks for an address, phone number, and your domain. I have seen incorrect information obtained time and time again. Google, as perfect and amazing as they are, can grab the wrong contact information and domain some times. Which is why it is oh so important for you to "claim your business" and edit your business details. Google will call or send snail mail with a verification number to you during this process so this is why it must be done by someone with access to your phone listed on your website or someone who receives mail for your company.
Simple Steps To Add Your Business to Google Maps
You will need a google gmail account to access this. You need a gmail account to access all different types of great tools that google has to offer. Take a look at this wonderful screen shot I have displayed below. You should see a lovely red arrow with all its glorious artistic wonder.
Go to the google maps main page in a new window http://maps.google.com/ and click on:
- Put your business on Google Maps
- Click - Add new listing
- Enter your business contact information
- Enter other details about your business
- Even a photo of your building or office if you like.
- You also have the opportunity to move the marker at this point if needed.
- Hit Submit and now you should see a phone or postcard option.
- Choose phone, hit finish, and your phone will start ringing right away!
- That's how fast Google is!
- Jot down the 5 digit verification number or memorize it.
- Enter that 5 digit verification number and you are set!
Congrats! Your business is now listed.

Edit Your Business on Google Maps
First you have to find your listing. It may not always be easy to find your listing. For this example, I am searching using the keywords "Cadence Contouring" which is a Health Spa. This example is one of my clients where google has populated the wrong url. Notice the URL in the image below is cadence banking.com. Only slightly off! Critical error when someone is wanting to search for this spa in Asheville!
To edit the business details click edit on your listing > claim your business > and then follow the prompts to finalize your listing. You will need to verify your business so have your phone close by because google is going to call you.
That's all you need to do to get that listing fixed. Reviews can be written on google so if you have customers / clients that love you to death and want to support you, ask them to write a review on google maps.
